B&M Champion Phazer v1 (1976)
☟
keep on fighting, till the end.
Well this is a cool little oddity.
As you have guessed from the title, this is the B&M (Barnes & Mullins) Champion Phazer. Yes, the same company that put out the famous B&M Champion Fuzz Unit! This little guy comes from a succession of pedals that 'B&M Champion' rebranded in the mid-70's for Colorsound. Earlier on in the decade they manufactured and distributed pedals for Exel; The Shatterbox and Treble Boost.
And although the Exel pedals, and especially the Fuzz Unit, are now highly sought after classics in the pedal world, the much lesser known Champion Phazer deserves to get it's 15 minutes...
This is a pretty funky pedal, with its bright orange plastic enclosure and its low tolerance for pain. B&M only manufactured this version for one year before switching to the 2-knob style and a more durable metal casing. As were all of the 'B&M Champion' series, the Phazer was ultimately a (1-knob and later exact) copy of a Colorsound pedal; the Colorsound Phaze X. Although many of the phase shifters of the day were straight clones of the MXR Phase 90, the Colorsound (to my knowledge) was not. As always, following the trail of clones is quite the journey in our universe, it is usually safe to say that Colorsound / Sola Sound were both innovators and refiners of the past. So anything is possible?
As you may know from reading this blog, I have a love close to my heart for orange-colored stompboxes. I don't really even understand why? Maybe it's because they just scream "Vintage 70's Awesomeness!". Or maybe it has a deep psychological meaning, where as a child I was chased by an orange alien in a dream and the only way to defend myself was being surrounded by similar colored objects?
who knows.
But yes, so when the chance came to snag this thing, I couldn't pass it up! Luckily for me, it actually sounds pretty badass too. I would say for a point of reference, it sits somewhere between an MXR Phase 90 and 45. It gives you a real nice range of speeds, going from raygun fast, to drunken slow. It pumps out that nice swirly and deep phasing we love, and best of all it combines perfectly with fuzz.
The sweep hits at a really perfect frequency range, where it still retains much of your original low end, and never squeaks out the highs. Making for a perfect match to any Big Muff or Fuzz Unit you team it up with, never hearing that 'flub' effect on the bassy side of things.
As for rarity, I have personally only seen 1 other Champion Phazer in my time. And although this isn't a solid indicator of scarcity, I do feel safe assuming that many of these were smashed by heavy-footed stoners, trying to ride the magic rainbow all the way into space, man.
Either way, it is a cool curiosity from an even more cool era in pedal history.
Well, I'm off to plug all of my orange pedals together and fight the alien nation the seeks to inhabit our world///

Octave Beauty!

Check out this amazingly perfect original Tycobrahe Octavia from our friend Dave Fox, yes the same man behind FoxRox Electronics...
here's the background story:
Back in 1990 I was working with Jim Gamble, who was the cheif engineer at Tycobrahe in the 70's. Through that association, I got to know Dirk Shubert, who was also an engineer at Tycobrahe. One day I did some work for Dirk and I told him about my interest in the very rare "Tycobrahe Octavia" effect pedal. A few days later a gift came in the mail. An Octavia, still in its original wooden box along with a Tycobrahe sticker, information sheet and warranty card with instructions.
so awesome///
big thanks to Dave for the photos,
and Thank you for checking us out!

Some. Trash.

Man, the 60's must have been a crazy time for fuzz-addicts.
Think about how insane it must have been to walk into a guitar store and the dude behind the counter hands you these boxes of scuzz to mess around with...
this disgustingly filthy mix of fuzzes from the late 60's all have very similar circuits, Check it out!
Goya Fury Box, Applied Banshee Fuzz, Conrad Buzz Box, UMI Buzztone ///

The King Has Come! rejoice and be glad.
☟
Earlier this week friend of the blog Bart/Discofreq (of effectsdatabase.com) scored, what over the years has become an almost mythical pedal, the Leo Fuzz King.
This Japanese Fuzz/(Wah?), which I am going to assume is from the mid-70's, was first and up until this point only, seen on the video for Yurayura Teikoku's song "Tsumetai Gift". Which we actually posted a while back RIGHT HERE.
At this point, the Leo Fuzz King is still considered an extremely rare stomp, with now only 2 known to exist, and possibly a third that an ex-collector remembered having as part his stash...
So be on the lookout!
It's enormous, so it shouldn't be hard to spot.
Who knows, maybe you have one holding up the foundation of your house or something?

Big Elk ///
☟
So while on vacation last week I missed out this fuzz, the Elk Big Muff Sustainar. Which as I'm sure you have guessed, is one of many Japanese Big Muff copies from the 1970's.
These aren't quite as sweet sounding as the Big Mag's, but they get pretty damn close...
check it out///

Strange EHX Axis Fuzz...?
☟
Check out this oddity, and yet another awesome contribution from our friend Jerms; it's an Electro Harmonix Axis Fuzz that isn't really an Axis Fuzz at all...
"So what is it ?" you may be asking.
We'll just let Jerms explain himself;
I traced it out and it is a 2 transistor muff fuzz with a big muff tone stack tacked on, with a makeup gain transistor added on the end.
Duh!
I'm sure that is what you were thinking.
Check out the amazing point-to-point wiring going on in there!
Always thankful to Jerms and especially for sharing this badass fuzz, as it becomes yet another piece of the greater Big Muff puzzle.
Thank you for checking us out.

Rotosound Fuzz Box, how I covet thee...
☟
Back in August, friend of the blog John posted a write-up of a new addition to his fuzzy family, over at my 2nd home the D*A*M Board. It's the incredibly rare and highly sought after Rotosound Fuzz Box. This one is extra special in that it's equipped with 3 Mullard OC81D's (regarded by many to be the pinnacle of fuzz transistors).
The sound is as raw as you can get, and would easily engulf a stadium full of screaming, drunk, dazed and confused Rock fanatics. Although there was a recent "reissue"of this icon, many feel as though it fell well short of this ability to capture the masses...
I'll let you be the judge.
so here she is in all her badass glory///
(a big thanks to John for sharing the love!)
